چکیده

Differences in the viscosity of the earth’s upper mantle beneath the western US (f 10–10 Pa s) and global average values based on glacial isostatic adjustment and other data (f 10–10 Pa s) are generally ascribed to differences in temperature. We compile geochemical data on the water contents of western US lavas and mantle xenoliths, compare these data to water solubility in olivine, and calculate the corresponding effective viscosity of olivine, the major constituent of the upper mantle, using a power law creep rheological model. These data and calculations suggest that the low viscosities of the western US upper mantle reflect the combined effect of high water concentration and elevated temperature. The high water content of the western US upper mantle may reflect the long history of Farallon plate subduction, including flat slab subduction, which effectively advected water as far inland as the Colorado Plateau, hydrating and weakening the upper mantle. Effects of lateral variations in lithospheric thickness and mantle viscosity on glacially induced surface motion in Laurentia

The effects of lateral variations in lithospheric thickness and mantle viscosity on surface motions in Laurentia are investigated using the Finite Element method. Both a simple axisymmetric ice model and a more realistic ice deglaciation model (ICE4G) are used to investigate the effects of lateral heterogeneity. Beside the laterally homogeneous reference model, six laterally heterogeneous model...

Glacial isostatic adjustment and the radial viscosity profile from inverse modeling

[1] A formal inverse procedure is used to infer radial mantle viscosity profiles from several observations related to the glacial isostatic adjustment process. The data sets consist of Late Pleistocene and Holocene sea level data from Scandinavia, the Barents Sea, Central Europe, Canada, and the far field, as well as observations of changes in the Earth’s rotation and gravitational field, and p...

Superweak asthenosphere in light of upper mantle seismic anisotropy

Earth’s upper mantle includes a 200 km thick asthenosphere underneath the plates where viscosity and seismic velocities are reduced compared to the background. This zone of weakness matters for plate dynamics and may be required for the generation of plate tectonics itself. However, recent seismological and electromagnetic studies indicate strong heterogeneity in thinner layers underneath the p...

The fate of water within Earth and super-Earths and implications for plate tectonics

The Earth is likely to have acquired most of its water during accretion. Internal heat of planetesimals by short-lived radioisotopes would have caused some water loss, but impacts into planetesimals were insufficiently energetic to produce further drying. Water is thought to be critical for the development of plate tectonics, because it lowers viscosities in the asthenosphere, enabling subducti...

Dynamics of the North American continent

S U M M A R Y The forces that cause deformation of western North America have been debated for decades. Recent studies, primarily based on analysis of crustal stresses in the western United States, have suggested that the deformation of the region ismainly controlled by gravitational potential energy (GPE) variations and boundary loads, with basal tractions due to mantle flow playing a relative...
